Go to the Light!
Sep. 27th, 2002 10:17 pmJuli and I took our day after the anniversary journey today, chasing after three lighthouses.
Our first stop was the Harbor Tours and Supply shop where we picked up our gifts for each other. The clerk actually didn't connect that we were buying gifts for each other and that we had purchased the same one. She thought she should have, what with us having the same last name and all. We let her off the hook there. We don't use the same last name. We traded in our New Dungeoness, WA for LA Harbor, CA. We haven't been to Southern Cal for our lighthouse journeys, but we will go sometime soon. Juli had just decided that she wanted an spark plug style light. I happened to remember in my research, that LA Harbor was a spark plug.
We set off after the exchange toward Gig harbor and the little lighthouse sculpture / entrance light. Unfortunately the powers that be are laying fiber optic cable to the southern end of Vashon Island. They had a large blue barge sitting right in front of the view. So we took it in stride, Juli style... we trespassed. Maybe we got some good shots.
Our next stop was Fox Island. The Tanglewood Island Lighthouse is visible from the Fox Island side of the Fox Island bridge. From that angle there is a large Mount Rainier right behind it. I did some research into this lighthouse and found... nothing at all. I gave up, went to the Fox Island website and sent an e-mail. They turned me over to a man who's written a book about growing up on F.I. in the 1940's He wrote me back and told me that this lighthouse was just a symbol or mascot of a church camp on Tanglewood Island. It was never an aid to navigation. I'm thinking hey, stick a light in it and call the coast guard.
Next was our journey to Olympia and Dofflemeyer Point. Dofflemeyer is the last light in Puget Sound that we hadn't bagged yet. Okay, the last one that was built before 1910, we still haven't seen Skunk Bay[1965] yet. Unfortunately Dofflemeyer is on very private property. Trespassing here would be a little difficult. I wanted to rent a kayak from the nearby marina and paddle around the point. Juli didn't. It wasn't until later that I realised... just 'cause we're married and she doesn't want to doesn't mean I couldn't. It was only $5.00. D'oh! We got some good shots from the marina with our telephotos and zooms. A nice silhouette job. We tried to see it from the South side by stopping into this Huge and Beautiful Thurston county park. We hiked down the trails to the beach and then up the beach, only to be thwarted by another no trespassing fence. Oh well.
One the way home we stopped at Red Robin in Tacoma and Half Price books across the parking lot from Red Robin. Juli only bought one book. *gasp* and only spent 33 cents on it. *double gasp* It was a hugo winner called... well I didn't focus on it, I was too busy digging change out of the corners of my pocket.
That was our day. We had a great time. the cold and rain is due to arrive Sunday. Very well timed.
Eddie is much better today. He's run out of his drug, so he's on his own. I think he prefers it that way.
