Federal Holidays
Feb. 18th, 2003 11:39 amYesterday was interesting. We, at one time, had a number of spouses of federal employees working for us. At the time they asked to have the federal holidays off, so we made them "Optional Days Off Without Pay". Now we don't have any federal employee spouses, but still, it is an optional day.
So everyone opted to work. Half of them showed up, and all but one went home at noon. The only reason the one stayed is because the boss did some clay work so that the associate would have work in the afternoon. He admitted that if he'd known he would be the only one left he would have opted out, but since the work was prepared for him he stayed. He's pretty responsible that way.
It worked out for him to, because the boss and he got a chance to talk about their favorite philosophical outlooks on life. Other then their conversation, it was very quiet here yesterday.

Holiday Shuffle
Holidays like this always confuse me. For example, when I returned home last night, I checked the mailbox because I wasn't around when it's traditionally delivered (around 3:00pm). Now, if you had seen how much mail my parents received during their two-week trip to Hawaii, an empty mailbox is... simply unheard of.
Puzzled and worried that some jerk-off had stolen the mail (right when I'm waiting for a book to arrive, of course), I went to the next door neighbor's house and asked if they'd received any today. She very kindly informed me that no mail is delivered on Presidents' Day.
DUH. Working in retail, I have no concept of holidays. :P
