Thanksgiving and followup
Nov. 30th, 2002 08:13 pmThanksgiving was okay. We had to make some special preparations due to my niece's chemical sensitivity, things like rewash the cloths we're planning to ware because of the dryer sheet stuff we've used, things like that. My aunt couldn't take it and was a no call, no show. My Uncle, the old Star Wars fan/curmudgeon that he is, came in fine spirits. He had just taken a friend to a thanksgiving meal using his own far and few between funds. So he was just full of the "milk of human kindness" and had no idea why he was having such a good time during the beginnings of the holidays. They're usually the worst time of year for him, so he says, "bah humbug/Christmas at ground zero and Grandma's altercations with reindeer."
Sure, the conversation went into "ain't it awful" gripes about government, environment, lack of intelligence in todays youth, things like that. Juli and I tried to get a word in edgewise to the contrary, with arguments refuting their claims. Claims like "90% of todays youth can't point to the state they live in!" "Says who?" [a question drowned out by the Brother-in-law taking the conversation to the next stage.] *sigh*
I think I'm a lot less Irish then my mother and my uncle. I can see the sun and the sky while they point out the clouds.
It was an okay holiday, sure. I've learned I've drifted a little further away from the 'family' mindset. Too many good things are happening in my life to play 'ain't it awful'.
Yesterday and today I've puttered around the house, fixing Christmas lights and home maintenance on an outdoor outlet. I took yesterday off. Only three people were planning to show up anyway, and two of them for only 6 hours. I found myself getting a little depressed this evening and went for a walk in the fog. It's thick out here! The walk was just what I needed. The few Christmas lights that are up look great in the fog. I ended up across the street at Tully's and had an eggnog chai tea. It all chased the blues away.
