We have two new housemates.

Introducing

River ................................. and .................................. Kaylee

Kaylee arrived Monday and River arrived today.

Juli decided on Monday that she was ready for more cats. We were going to search when she had a vacation at the end of September, however she wanted to go the the Humane Society on Monday to see what it would take to adopt. Well, you know how that goes. Unfortunately, for both Juli and Me, Juli had to leave for Bellingham on Tuesday, so she's not here for the breaking in period. ...and I'm the only one with two kittens until she gets back.

Kaylee was born domesticated. She was huddled in the corner of a cage with two rambunctious larger brothers, which spoke to me right away. It took her a few hours to get used to the idea that she was free of that. As soon as she put it together that Juli and I were friendly she went on a tare. This little kitten is racing around the house, up the stairs and down, leaping into our laps and purring up our noses.

River is a different story. She and her littermates were strays and haven't been fully domesticated. Juli was drawn to River because the kitten looks like Apie. [click here for more info on Apie ]   This is the only picture that we have of Apie.  Thanks to

River is Very Very cautious. She just had "the operation" so she needs to be a little quiet. That's difficult if she wants to run from everything. I'm betting she'll relax as she settles in. She is larger than Kaylee. That may be an age difference or Kaylee may just turn out to be a small cat. Timid Kaylee was not so timid with her greeting. It's the first time I've heard her vocalize. River is all about the vocalization.

So now we have cats again. I was hoping for a vacation first, but...

Awww... so cute!

I find myself missing a feline presence in my life a lot lately, but I don't know how fair it would be to the animal if I get another cat... I live alone, and work pretty long hours.

Get TWO! They're small!

I do understand though. When I lived in Indianola Edward spent most of his day outside.

I considered that. Then they could at least keep each other company.

I'm a believer in the "indoor only" cat-keeping mentality. And since I'm currently living in a small one-bedroom, that also concerns me as to how fair it would be. I still haven't ruled it out yet, though.

My wife's cat, Saavik, was a one bedroom apartment cat until we got married. Juli chose to have her de-clawed. There are all sorts of questions about whether that's cruel or not. Saavik didn't seem to mind. She developed some very fast reflexes though, and could hook and drag anything to her teeth before you knew it.

Eddie and Apie were drip dry [indoor/outdoor].

River and Kaylee will be indoor.

Was Saavik indoor only? Declawed, I would assume so... but one never knows.

Definitely some food for thought.

Saavik was indoor, yes. She got to go outside on supervised adventures. [CLICKY] This is her on a supervised adventure. (http://dolphinchatter.livejournal.com/489131.html)

Then there was the day after our wedding when she escaped Juli's mom and was missing for three hours. I got to see Juli drive 90 on county roads [please, never again]. Saavik called out to Juli from under a rhododendron as soon as the car pulled into the apartment parking lot, so she didn't have too much of a desire for the great outdoors.

Hmm... you may have named them reversely...

The Tortie (short for tortiseshell) looks very calm and the Black kitty looks very sneaky. :)

However, my Tortie is the Queen B of the household... and when I had black kitties, they were rambunctious, but sweet and loving.

Very cute at any rate, have fun with them.

Wish I wasn't feeling so totalled by work, I would get together with Juli for lunch or something...

I've always called Apie a Tortoiseshell, but the vet called the pattern a Torbie. You make sense.

[research research research] AH! A Tortie is a red and black kitty, and it looks like River is indeed a Tortie. A Torbie is short for Tortoiseshell-Tabby.

As for the name, Juli chose the name River because she looks all pebbly like a river bed and Kaylee just followed with the Firefly connection.

Temperament is proving out though. Kaylee is all over with the chasing and the leaping and River is skulking about.

Your essay on Apie is wonderful. Made me remember her well.
