Aug. 27th, 2002 09:00 amTelebyte has updated their modems. I knew something was wrong when it took forever [read "12 seconds instead of 6 seconds"] for my modem to get into the handshake mode, both from home and from work. I finally gave up last Thursday and gave tech support a call. I told them what modem I had and they said that's one of the two that they were having complaints about. Everyone else loves the change and are experiencing far faster communication.
So after some tweaking in the software, sure enough the work modem is connecting at 48k, far faster then the 36k it had before. [Okay, it's not DSL or cable, but it's all I've got.] Tech support told me to call when I got home so that we could tweak that modem as well.
I got home that night and gave them a shout, told them what modem I had... yep, that's the other of the two modems they're having problems with. The other problem is that South Kitsap phone lines suck. The phone company has used splitters on all the old phone lines and even 'they' are maxed out. So we tweaked the home modems software, sure enough I can connect faster; a blazing 28k while I was lucky to get 16k before.
For South Kitsap DSL will be available when the man with horns on his head and a pointy tail and packing a pitchfork goes rollerskating in downtown Port Orchard. Cable is available, but all report are that Charter sucks.
That's the state of communication in my neck of the woods.

Modem blues and their fixes...
Date: 2002-09-05 04:21 pm (UTC)You might be able to get over 28.8 with their help - No promises, but they've done wonders (44.1 instead of 28.8) for me. Good luck!
