I dropped my folks at the airport today. We explored as much of Concourse "A" that we could without going through the security checkpoint. Very cool! The exit is about a 6 story tall open space, glassed in, with a mock up of Burt Rutan's aircraft, Voyager, suspended in the center. Voyager was the two man craft in which Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager flew nonstop around the world without refueling. That was back in 1986.
The floor under the Voyager mock up is most a large bare space. Here and there are large flat natural rock sculptures, some with fountains. It's all very relaxing and very cool.
I can't wait to see it completed. It's going to be a fun place to... well... take off and arrive from. We cant really just visit there anymore. Security and the like.
Unfortunately for my clan, my uncle's artwork will no longer be seen after all. His was the curved concrete sculpture that was called "Map of the World" and had a stylized relief of the globe. There were two, located between Concourse "B" and the cafe in the central terminal, and between the central terminal bar and Concourse "C". Only one was saved. the other was to be placed in a children's section, but the designer has decided he can't use it. It's likely that it was destroyed as well. *sigh*
It's still going to be a beautiful airport.
