One of the troubling items I was working on during the Sprint phone fiasco was getting our Expression 636 scanner and transparency unit to work with Windows XP. One of the hitches is that Epson has abandoned the Expression 636. Therefore they didn't bother to make an XP driver for it.

It took me a few days research, and mind, I can't sit and focus on this one problem while trying to run the business, AND get the phones fixed. I finally got it all working today. The transparency unit is really the only reason we kept the older scanner on, but it was important enough to keep. Most of our historical reference are slides from our Point Hope trip in 1961. They need to be archived, and soon. They are deteriorating.

We actually have two scanners hooked up to this computer. The old Epson, which [livejournal.com profile] skyrigdon calls "Kick ass", and I agree, runs on SCSI. The newer Hydra from HP runs on USB. We really only needed a printer and a copier. The scanner function was gravy. The HP does okay, but the Epson does better. Both of them fly through their functions, now hooked up to a 2.55 Ghz machine! The old graphics machine was a P-II 450Mhz, and the scanning function just limped compared to what they do now.

We're retiring the 450. I wanted to replace our P-I 100 Mhz booking machine, but since we put the monitor from the 450 on it, it's working great! It replaced the monitor we cannibalized from an old dead 486/33. Our only concern is that data storage tech on the P-1 may advance beyond it's capabilities.

The success with the scanner has me in great spirits though.
