Pelicans Briefly
Oct. 5th, 2004 09:38 pmSome years back we had an unusually warm summer. Great White Sharks were seen off the coast and in the Straight, and Pelicans showed up in Puget Sound. I was a bit amazed back then. I mean there was an indication of climate change.
This weekend, while we were heading back from Cannon Beach, we stopped at Fort Stevens and ventured out to the South Jetty of the Mouth of the Columbia. There, ... Pelicans. All over. Little brown Pelicans. But down here on the Oregon North Coast, and I'm to understand at Washington's Long Beach, it's the pelican's natural habitat. Well now, how hard is it for a pelican to hop over Satsop and Montisano to get to Puget Sound?
Now, seeing a pelican in Puget Sound wouldn't be that big of a deal. It's still interesting though... that there is just enough variation in the climate between Long Beach and Puget Sound to deter pelicans from coming here regularly.
