Moulin Rouge
Jun. 5th, 2002 11:23 pmJuli and I just watched Moulin Rouge. This isn't a spoiler, but I'll give you a chance to skip without reading.
I find it easier to deal with a tragedy when I know who dies right up front. And sure enough they let us know right up front that the girl dies.
This is a terrific movie. There's lots of fast camera action, great costumes and a fantasy element that doesn't go overboard. It's fun, funny, and a great romp.
It's a musical. Most of the songs are contemporary from Madonna, Sting, and others. they start with "The hills are alive" and it fits right in. The Argentine sings a great "Roxanne" with a harsh gravelly voice, and what the villain and the theater owner do to "Like a virgin" is hysterical. The lavish set have a number of hidden sight gags, I'll have to rent this again, or better yet, own it.
I give this film 11 out of ten. "It goes to eleven, see?"
