Beware the never mind!
Mar. 14th, 2002 08:57 pmWe've spent the week cleaning out the office. Now I actually have to get out of the chair and take four steps in order to get something. They don't seem to realize how long I've worked to get the walls closer to my hands. We've been pitching out old computer bits, 2400 baud external modems, 5" tape backups, memory cards [remember those?], tractor feed forms, old windowed envelopes preprinted with outdated 12 year old addresses.... A lot of the clutter we produced was from a resistance to disposing of things we paid money for. Good God, we spent $25.00 on tapes, 10 of which can be replaced by a 19 cent CD. How hard is throwing the tape away? More then half of the office clutter was old crap and old records we have no use for. Pack ratting has it's place, but sometimes the rat needs to start over.
Now that the office is clear, perhaps I can clear my mind. I strongly believe that your outer environment reflects your inner environment. That being the case, if you make the effort to change the outer environment the inner one is forced to change as well.
Has it worked? Let's see... I got our taxes done. I've changed the beneficiary of my IRA [in case of the proverbial bus incident] from my parents to my wife, Juli. Hey, we've been married for 3 and a half years so I guess it's time[heh]. Anything else? I've started writing a story, though I don't yet have enough to read at writer's night. Hmmm. Doesn't feel like it's working yet. Think I still have some cob webs to clean out. Music always helps.
I learned from
genebreshears's LJ that last Wednesday was the last class of the quarter. Somehow I thought it was a little further away. I was disappointed in the instructor and stopped going after the ... I guess it was the 7th class. I also felt I'd learned enough about the graphic arts industry to turn away from it, at least from a design studio point of view. I got pretty discouraged by this guy. Many students did. Only five of the fourteen finished up. Still, I don't like leaving things half done. So I'm irritated. At myself for quitting? Oddly no. I'm a little irritated with the school. I feel a little used by them. I paid tuition so I could end up helping with a new instructor's on the job training. It's a pisser. Gripe gripe gripe.
I think I accomplished what I set out to do. I started these classes for a couple of reasons. One was to find out what it was. I have a job where I've had to teach myself Photoshop and HTML. I managed to produce brochures and a web site, four full page advertisements for the cruise ship tourist magazines with 400,000 count print runs, a few fliers announcing new product.
Actually I went to SVC because I wanted to understand the computer generating end of things more then learn the graphic arts industry. I was guided away from the computer aspects by the interviewer. I needed foundation courses, she said. Like Gene, I think the foundation courses will come in handy when I start designing new things next week. But the more advanced course, and the instructor from the graphics industry... How to say this?
It's not fair to judge an entire industry from one bad classroom experience. And I don't. I've seen some of the direction that graphic arts is going. I've had two graphic design courses, a beginning and an advanced. I've also received my first "PRINT" magazine that shows the winners in the graphic arts field. It's all very... Seattle Weekly, very poster-iffic. I've grown up all my life in a different art world. I'm very square peg in this round field. Maybe I should come back and fight for what I believe is good.
Hey, I could be one of those people that strikes out on my own and creates a whole new avenue of graphic art! heh.
So now the office is clean. Next we get it organized and all the important papers in their proper place. I knew where they all were, but I've got to watch for that proverbial bus I guess. Now maybe I can get some of those inner ideas going. Without SVC I've got to find some new directions.
