I took my 75 year old Uncle Dale to see "Star Wars: Attack of the Clones" last night. He is a Star Wars fanatic. He's worn out his "A New Hope" and "Return of the Jedi" videos by playing them over and over. He didn't like "Empire Strikes Back" because of it's dark nature. But then he's always been pessimistic, and I can understand how he wants to feel good rather then see a good story.

Last night was hysterical. We both had a great time. First I took him to dinner. He proceeded to monopolize the waitress' time by telling her all about our agreement and went on into Star Wars trivia with her. She actually came back with many trivial items herself. But as she stood there, empty tray in hand, some customers started looking both interested in the conversation and irritated that they weren't getting served.

We then went to the movie. There were only about 12 people watching the movie. That meant many of the exclamations of awe were easily overheard, but Dale kept them to a minimum. "Lucas is pulling all together! He's actually doing it!" Needless to say, Dale loved the movie. He was concerned that it would bury itself in new tech special effects. As we left I asked him if he enjoyed this movie so much, with all it's darker elements, then why couldn't he enjoy Empire Strikes Back? His answer was that he can now, that there is such a large story being told and ESB is part of it, that he can watch it for what it is; episode V.

While we were walking to the car he was spouting exuberance, and thoroughly enjoying how "Yoda kicks butt!" Two young kids were sitting against the wall and asked if he enjoyed it. "We're going in to see it now." Dale proceeded to tell them how great it was, even the scene that Dave Ross on KIRO complained about, then he went on to quote the scene at them.

Later at the Barns & Noble coffee shop, as the barista was preparing our drinks, he held her attention by asking for a "Dark navy coffee with two shots of engine oil and a twist of diesel". And also about how great the movie was and... while the line waited patiently behind us and the PA announced the closing of the store.

My ever lovin' U.N.C.L.E. is a kick in the pants. I look forward to the next movie.
